About 70% of Japan's land is covered by forests. In the past, Japan was blessed with the bounty of its forests, and they were an integral part of people's lives. However, over time, people have grown distant from them, both physically and emotionally. We understand that neglected forests can become harmful, that we must protect the water sources and ecosystems that sustain life, and that it is a waste not to utilize our forests—yet the reality is challenging. How can we reconnect with these forests that are so close, yet feel so distant? What kind of future will our cumulative efforts and challenges create? What can we learn from the forests? This year, with the introduction of a uniform "Forest Environmental Tax" for all citizens, why not take this opportunity to think about our forests as a matter of personal importance?
