Overview:
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began in February of last year, the spread of COVID-19 that has left deep scars, and the structural confrontation between the US and China. The world order is now becoming even more opaque. As authoritarian regimes gain momentum and the influence of Global South countries expands, the role of the United States and the ideals it has long championed, such as democracy and liberalism, are being significantly challenged.
Against this backdrop, the Center for Strategic Studies, a new on-campus think tank established at Keio University in March 2023, will examine the increasingly opaque world order and the wavering role of the United States from the regional perspectives of Europe, Russia, and China. In this public symposium, we will explore these issues, taking cues from two new books left by the late Professor Toshihiro Nakayama of the Faculty of Policy Management, who passed away suddenly about a year ago and who, through his work at think tanks and other activities, provided inexhaustible wisdom for considering America's role in the world: "When the Nation of Ideals Creaks: Obama, Trump, Biden, and America" (Chikura Shobo) and "American Intellectuals and the Communist Party: A Self-Portrait of the Nation of Ideals" (Keiso Shobo).
